Advice Anyone? Beseiged by Spam Commenting
I am getting the most horrific spam comments on my blog!
What can I do about it?
Thank God I have enabled comment moderation, or y’all would be running for them thair hills.
I’m open to your advice - as long as you keep it relatively clean.
Stop allowing anonymous comments. I went from several dozen a day, which were mostly caught by Blogger's spam filters, thankfully, to not a single one in the past three weeks.
ReplyDeleteComment moderation is about the only thing which works well. You could go to "prove you're not a robot," but some people get properly incensed by that.

Janie -- do you allow anonymous comments? If so, turn that off and just allow registered users in your comments settings. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteThe same was happening to me. I ended up having more Spam comments than comments from readers, ugh! Anyway, I switched to Registered Users only. It helped A LOT even though I will still get a couple Spam messages here and there but nothing like before. I can deal with a couple! Hope you find an answer cuz it IS frustrating...
ReplyDeleteBecause I had someone leaving a lot of unkind comments, I went to no longer allowing 'anonymous' comments, and that put an end to that, and spam I was getting too.
ReplyDeleteThe spammers HAVE been busy lately. The spam filter on my email has caught over 100 messages per day for the past week or so. Seems to have slowed down yesterday. Perhaps we're experiencing a lull.
ReplyDeleteFor my blog, I disallowed Anonymous comments and this solved the spam. I hated to do it, because some of my friends commented as Anonymous ... but so did almost all of the spammers. Comment moderation is fine, but it requires you to sort through the spam to find the genuine comments. Word verification is too difficult and has proved to be unnecessary.
Nothing you can do about it but delete them. Sorry. Started to hit me too.
ReplyDeleteyah, i can only suggest the word verification thing. I hadn't read my blog in a while and when i went back found all these bizarre comments waiting to be published (since I have to verify them for older posts only). I deleted them from the back end so they never showed up. I have noticed these nasty spam comments on blogs that don't have word verification or email authorization enabled.......annoying, dirty spammer
ReplyDeleteThanks, y'all, I think I have it changed. If I don't please let me know next time y'all come by to comment!
